Mistaken Point

Over 560 million years ago, strange creatures inhabited the deep ocean of our planet.  They resembled plants, but they were the oldest known complex animals to exist in our world. These soft-bodied organisms known as the Ediacarans (Ee-dee-ak-ah-rans), were believed to be filter feeders that were attached to the sea floor sediment surface.

Millions of years ago, some of these early multi-celled organisms were covered by catastrophic volcanic ash and preserved in exquisite detail and abundance. These fossils were discovered on Mistaken Point on the Avalon Peninsula in the early 1970′s by researchers from Memorial University. They are now protected in the Mistaken point Ecological Reserve and recognized as an international treasure.

In 2009, the Johnson GEO CENTRE participated in a project to make resin casts of the fossils so they could be displayed and enjoyed without deteriorating the original site.

Now through the GEO CENTRE’s newest exhibit, they are waiting to be discovered again… By you! Come and visit the fossil cast of the Mistaken Point Organisms, on permanent display in Our Province gallery. Get up close and personal with the remnants of these facinating animals and see what they can tell you about life millions of years ago.

Let them leave an impression on you.
